How do you live in Northern Michigan in winter?  This question has been asked to me hundreds of times.  The answer to this question lies in your personality, love of the outdoors, motivation, and, I think, where you were born.

How can you live here in winters

Growing up in Alpena, Michigan, I always found ways to occupy my time.   Whatever the season, or weather, you can find a perfect opportunity in nature.

My answer to this question begins with a question, “where were you born?”  This will tell me the mindset of the person.  If I was born in the south, I probably would have no motivation or interest in moving to Northern Michigan year-round.

Recently I met a few groups of people who are from Peru, Brazil, and Central America.  They were on their Summer breaks from college.  They came to Northern Michigan to work at Boyne and Boyne Highlands.  Most of them had never been in snow!  They were not the fondest of our polar vortex winter. 🙂

My suggestion to them is layers.  You don’t necessarily have to have the best clothing but layering is very important.

One advantage to winters is that winters are much quieter than Summers in Northern Michigan.  It is nice to have the lull in activity and tourism.

Another way to work with winters in Northern Michigan is by planning a winter getaway.  This year I traveled to Florida for a long weekend with friends.  A trip away will rejuvenate your soul.  🙂

In addition, location activities like skiing, sledding, skating, snowshoeing, walks, movies, dinners out, etc. are a way to cope with the longer winters.

If you can get through the winters, Spring, Summer, and Fall are some of the best anywhere.

We have a winter wonderland here in Petoskey Northern Michigan, a Spring spectacular, a super Summer, and a fabulous Fall.

Come to Northern Michigan and enjoy our four seasons.
