Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding!

The art of finding the perfect wedding dress is sometimes more difficult than finding the perfect partner.  Well, nothing is ever perfect, really.

Being a wedding photographer, I have the pleasure of seeing all sorts of wedding dresses and gowns.  I have seen the good, the bad, and the outright wrong.  You probably think that I don’t know anything about dresses.  Well, I did wear a dress on Halloween when I was Cher and my wife was Sonny. 🙂

Here are a few things to think about when you select your wedding dress/gown:

  1. What is your body shape?
  2. Where is your wedding taking place? i.e. locally, destination, church, outdoor
  3. What season?
  4. How much moving around are you going to do?
  5. Will the dress stay put when on your body?
  6. Will the dress make you look skinny or large?
  7. What color looks best on you?
  8. Does the dress bustle?
  9. How big of a train, if any?
  10. Would you wear flats or heals?
  11. How would you look next to your groom?
  12. Does the dress emphasize your positive points?
  13. Does the dress confirm to your wedding theme?
  14. How do your accessories fit with the dress? i.e. veil, flowers, hair, shoes, etc.
  15. What will your guests think? i.e.  you wouldn’t want a tea length at a black tie event
  16. Is the dress practical?
  17. 20 years from now do you think you will still love it?  Is it timeless?
  18. What is your price range?
  19. Will the dress look nice with your bridesmaids dresses?
  20. Strapless vs strapped dresses?
  21. Will your body change drastically prior to your wedding?
  22. Can the dress be altered?

These are just a few questions to think about in your search for your wedding dress or gown.  This will help you get in the right mindset for picking your wedding dress.

Some brides like to have multiple dresses on their wedding day.   You can change into an evening dress or come into your reception in a different dress too.

A couple suggestions during your wedding day for your wedding dress.  Bring double sided tape to help keep your dress where you want it.  Have spray deodorant to spray your legs during hot wedding days.  This helps with sweat and with sticking.  If it is not hot, use some anti-static spray so your dress doesn’t stick.  Bring a dress repair kit.  Try not to do any makeup once your dress is on.  Drink through straws to help with possible spills.

I would suggest looking online before shopping at bridal shops to get an idea of ladies who are your shape and their wedding dress selection.  Educate yourself and you will know the dress terms when shopping.

A wonderful online location to start looking is www.Pinterest.com .  Search for “wedding dress” or “wedding gown.”  You can also follow ladies that have similar style weddings to yours and see what they are wearing.
